Studio lighting workshop

Studio lighting workshop / 12 April 2017

Learn the basics of studio flash photography with hands-on learning, shooting and lighting with models under different lighting conditions.

Become more confident in producing high quality photography for your own blogs, websites, and social channels with our training workshop and make a real difference to your photographic outputs whether for your website, social media or just for your own pleasure.

I will lead you through the three and a half hour session from my Cardiff-based studio, with a mix of practical, no-nonsense theory (seriously, we’ll keep the jargon to a minimum) and lots of shooting / practical time. We’ll be finishing off the session with a Q&A plus a chance to chat.

What you can expect to get out of the session:

  • Tips to help you maximise what you can do with little or no equipment
  • Places limited to 10 to allow maximum shoot time and one-on-one support
  • Introduction to key studio equipment you need to start taking photos
  • Types of lighting / flash
  • Creative composition with practical application for websites, editorial and design
  • Moving away from auto-mode to control light and expand your creativity
  • Lighting advice (on a budget / realistic circumstances / flash)
  • Good amount of time shooting models and trying techniques
  • Drinks, nibbles and light bites to keep you suitably refreshed.

  • Shoot our models under different lighting conditions
  • Chance to have your own photos taken by others
  • Info and advice on different types of photography kit
  • Tips on how to get the most out of your camera.
  • Access to my prop box and studio
  • Apps to help you process / edit and share your images
  • Q&A session with me
  • Drinks, nibbles and light bites to keep you suitably refreshed.

Session note handouts provided.

We recommend that you bring a DSLR with a standard hotshoe flash attachment. We do have a spare camera too so no need to stress too much. (If shooting with Sony, you will need to bring an adapter like one of these).

It is advised, but not essential, that you familiarise yourself with these camera settings before the session:

  • Changing ISO
  • How to change aperture (referred to F)
  • How to change shutter speed (usually shown as 1/125 )

Digital note handouts provided after the session.
