Rhinoseros - show imagery for Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru

Rhinoseros - theatr genedlaethol cymru - advertising image

Recent advertising photography commission for Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru for their upcoming Welsh language production of Eugene Ionesco’s ‘Rhinoseros’. The brief was to conceptualise, plan, shoot and edit a featured rhino-man to be the key central character which would form the key elements of the advertising campaign.

The shoot started life as sketches, moodboards, Pinterest boards that were shared between myself and the client - we worked around several ideas and decided upon 2 or 3 main concepts -all that we’d aim to capture on the day of the shoot.

The shoot quickly evolved and with the help of Firebug studios near Cardiff, we pieced together the shoot. As with all shoots - I plan as much as possible but also allow for creative changes on the day - from either myself or the client.

A rhinoceros thunders through the streets of a quiet village. Everyone is baffled. Where did this terrifying animal come from?

But, one by one, the village residents succumb to the new order and transform into beasts. As the world and the people around him change, the unlikely hero Bérenger clutches on to his identity and refuses to give in – but what is the cost of not conforming?

Filled with unexpected humour and nightmarish tension, Rhinoseros is a commentary on society, extremism and how hatred can spread like a virus. As relevant now as ever, this absurdist masterpiece by Eugène Ionesco comes to Welsh stages in its first Welsh language adaptation by Manon Steffan Ros under the direction of Steffan Donnelly.

Watch out – the rhinoceroses are coming!
