Why professional headshots matter: The key to making a strong first impression

Your headshot: Much, much more than just a photo

First impressions happen fast - whether you're meeting someone in person or connecting online. And, being honest, we all judge a book by its cover, at least a little bit. Your headshot is often the first thing people see, so why not make it work for you?

A great headshot helps you look professional, approachable, and confident. Whether you're growing your career, running a business, building your personal brand or investing in how your business and team looks to the outside world, having a strong image makes a difference. It’s not just about looking good - it’s about looking like the best version of yourself.

The psychology of first impressions

People form opinions in less than a second based on appearance alone. That’s not just a theory, it’s backed by research. Your headshot is like your digital handshake. It tells people if you’re trustworthy, professional, and easy to work with before you’ve even said a word.

A well-lit, high-quality photo makes you look more credible. We’ve all seen those cropped party photos on LinkedIn - don’t be that person! Investing in a professional headshot ensures you’re putting your best face forward (literally).

Where you need a professional headshot (and why it matters)

A good headshot isn’t just for actors and models. These days, everyone needs one - and there are countless digital touch-points where potential clients or customers will come into contact with yours, including:

LinkedIn (when you’re looking for jobs)

Recruiters scan hundreds of profiles, and they make split-second decisions on who to click on. A polished headshot makes you stand out, look professional, and - most importantly - look hireable.

LinkedIn (when you’re looking for new clients)

If you rely on LinkedIn to meet contacts and network for new business opportunities, a professional corporate headshot is essential. When a possible new client looks further into your team or company, they’ll see your fellow colleagues with similar headshots and understand you’re a business that’s (a) invested in your brand and people and (b) a professional outfit that takes itself seriously.

Company websites

If you’re part of a business, a great team page with professional headshots helps build trust with potential clients. Any company’s ‘team’ page is always one of the top 3 most popular pages on your website, because new clients want to see who they’ll be working with. And no one wants to work with a company where half the team is using outdated selfies and the other half has no photo at all.

Social media & personal branding

If you’re a freelancer, entrepreneur or creative, your profile picture is part of your brand. A professional headshot can help you attract the right clients and opportunities - without looking overly stiff or corporate (unless that’s the vibe you want!).

Speaking engagements & press features

If you’ve got a media opportunity or you’re speaking at an event, you don’t want to send a cropped photo from a friend’s wedding… A high-quality headshot means you’ll always have a professional image ready to go.

DIY vs. professional headshots: Spot the difference

Here’s a comparative side-by-side of a self-taken headshot and professional headshot of Meg, who works with me at Alex Mills Photographic (and has approved this comparison!).

As we can see, the selfie commits a few visual sins:

  • Low quality

  • Colours not true to life

  • Crops out the top of the head

  • Includes visual clutter in the background

  • No depth of field

Comparing it to a formal image I took, there’s no question which headshot feels more professional and assuring.

Other cardinal sins of self-taken headshots may include:

  • The blurry, pixelated photo

  • The awkward selfie with bad lighting

  • The ‘I cropped my mates out’ picture

  • The way-too-serious passport-style shot

While it might be tempting to snap a quick selfie, a proper headshot makes a world of difference. A professional photographer knows how to get the lighting, composition, and editing just right - so you look like you on your best day.

And if you’re thinking, "But I’m not photogenic!" - don’t worry. Any great photographer will help you relax and bring out your natural confidence, without forcing stiff or awkward poses.
