Location: Cardiff, Penarth, Vale of Glamorgan and South Wales
Format: 1-to-1 photography training at my studio
Duration: 6 x 1 hour
Level: Beginner to advanced
Cost: £395
A practical 6 × 1-hour photography course designed to help beginners understand their camera, get out of Auto mode and start making more deliberate photographs.
The course is taught one-to-one at my studio in Penarth, near Cardiff, and is built around your own camera, interests and experience.
Learn photography properly - without trying to absorb everything in one day
Photography can become complicated very quickly, especially with modern cameras and hundreds of settings, menus and options… but you only need to understand a relatively small number of things to start taking much more control over your photographs.
This beginner photography course breaks those skills into six one-hour sessions, giving you time to learn something, practise it in your own photography and then come back with questions.
Rather than spending a full day trying to remember everything at once, we build your knowledge gradually.
A typical course will cover:
setting up your camera properly
getting out of Auto mode
aperture, shutter speed and ISO
understanding exposure
autofocus and focus areas
choosing the right lens
depth of field
controlling movement and shutter speed
composition
working with natural light
recognising better shooting positions and backgrounds
reviewing photographs and understanding what worked
developing a simple, repeatable way of using your camera
The emphasis is always on taking photographs rather than sitting through lots of theory. I’ll explain a technique, we’ll put it into practice and look at the results together.
Six sessions, tailored around you
There is a structure to the course, but it isn’t a rigid syllabus.
Once the fundamentals are in place, we can spend more time on the kinds of photography you’re actually interested in.
That could include:
portraits and photographing people
landscape photography
travel photography
street photography
events and family photography
using flash
low-light photography
action and movement
using different lenses
basic editing and Lightroom
understanding your particular camera in more depth
Someone interested in landscapes will therefore have a slightly different course from somebody who mainly wants to photograph people.
The aim is to give you the essential skills first, then apply them to the photographs you actually want to make.
Why 6 × 1-hour sessions?
The gap between sessions is useful as you’ll have time to practise what we’ve covered with your own camera, discover what makes sense and, importantly, find the things that don’t.
Bring those photographs and questions back to the next session and we can work through them together.
Over six sessions, that creates a cycle of:
Learn → practise → review → improve
rather than trying to remember an entire photography course after one intensive day.
Who is the course for?
This course is ideal if you:
have recently bought a mirrorless or DSLR camera
mostly use Auto mode
understand a few settings but aren’t sure how they work together
find camera menus and terminology confusing
want a more structured introduction to photography
have learned bits from YouTube but want everything joined together
want more confidence before tackling specialist subjects such as flash or studio photography
are returning to photography after a long break
You don’t need any previous photography training and you don’t need expensive equipment.
We’ll work with the camera and lenses you already own.
Where does the course take place?
The sessions normally take place at my studio in Penarth, near Cardiff.
Depending on the subject and weather, some sessions can also involve practical photography outside or at another suitable nearby location.
The course is particularly convenient for photographers in Cardiff, Penarth, the Vale of Glamorgan and wider South Wales.
Beginner photography course — £395

If you’re not ready to commit to six sessions, the 1-hour photography lesson is a good starting point.
