How to prepare for your commercial photoshoot
Whether it's for your personal brand, headshot or for your business, getting ready for a photoshoot can be an exciting (and slightly daunting) venture.
Read my guide for steps on how to get the most out of the photo session and get my expert advice on planning, clothing choices, posing, location styling and more.
Simple Beauty Lighting Setup for Portraits
This is a great simple beauty lighting setup for portraits. Its called a beauty (or glamour) lighting setup because it is aimed at revealing the skin and the 'beauty' of the subject.
In addition to getting great results, you also only need very minimal kit. The flash head with softbox will be the only light source used and will primarily light the subject and fall off light will illuminate the background to a lesser degree.
Stop frame animation tester
Recent tester stop frame animation video. It was just me on an early morning, action man, a sharpie and my cat.
Back from down under
Finally back to Cardiff, UK after an awesome adventure in Australia. I've got galleries and blogs planned for a more comprehensive overview, but thought I'd share a few shots from my 24mm (my last post was all about this lens, and asking if it is the best lens for travel). Anyhow, here's a sniff of some of the places and locations we got to.
Early morning training with HelenMarie Wilson
I've been training with HelenMarie for about 6 months now. Once a week, keeping an all-watchful eye and advising on my technique in the gym, providing regular and updated session plans and giving me great motivation and support along the way.
Love Cardiff / Sherman Theatre
I recently had a roundup of images used in the Sherman Theatre's Love Cardiff spread in their latest brochure. The concept of the new play is all about your stories. They want(ed) your stories about anything to do with your life in Cardiff. Good, bad, funny, sad ...
Waywood Bespoke

Rothfink Lookbook 2015
New stock had arrived at the Rothfink Industries lair. It was raining, it was dark, it was pretty grim ... it was perfect for shooting a lookbook for this fashion and lifestyle brand.
Mannequins of Bruges
I've always been obsessed with mannequins, masks, realistic recreations of the human form plus a large smattering of (anti)consumerism. It could have been due to a clandestine viewing of Bladerunner at an early age, who knows.
TTV (aka Through The Viewfinder)
This started out as a facebook 'thing'. One of the challenges where you are nominated to post five pictures over five days on five topics of your choice. In all honesty, and I'm not usually one for these nomination things, I was glad of the challenge. Personally, I sometimes struggle what to post. I over analyse. I am over critical. I over think. So, here's me just doing. This first roundup is called TTV (aka Through the viewfinder). It's a great technique to utilise that old large-viewfinder camera you may have. Natural crust, grain and dirt - just what the doctor ordered and not a sniff of photoshop in sight.
Cardiff Bay to Penarth
A post-christmas walk from Cardiff Bay barrage to Penarth Pier. A much needed 'blowing out of the cobwebs' along this quite ruggedly barren and curious coastline. Along the way I got to try out a few new ND filters, muvi timelapse device and gorilla pod. Yes, I was a good boy this year.
Night time shooting test this summer
This summer, I set myself just one challenge: To try some night-time long exposure photography.

For the uninitiated, Cammy is a streetfighter character from Capcom and this particular version appeared in Streetfighter vs. SNK2 - and this is mine and masubi’s collaboration shoot to bring the charactr to life.
